During the summer of 2003, the National Weather Service in Goodland has
been fortunate to have four outstanding students working at the office.
The four include one Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP)
employee and three volunteers. The students came to the office from
Northeast Colorado and Northwest Kansas. Two of the students are
working towards degrees in meteorology at area universities and the
others will be seniors at area high schools.
As part of their training experiences the students not only worked with
forecasters and learned about office operations, but also culminated
their summer’s work at the office by preparing presentations for the
staff on a topic of interest to them. The presentations included a
report on a flood study being conducted in the area, a lightning study
project designed by the student, and a report on the data the office has
gathered using various forecast matrixes during the severe weather
seasons of 2002 and 2003. Students also visited a private weather
company, attended a meeting of the area American Meteorological Society
chapter, and participated in office outreach activities. One student
even obtained his ham radio license while volunteering at the office.
