...DROUGHT SITUATION CONTINUES TO IMPROVE...

.SYNOPSIS...

IN THE OCTOBER 17TH RELEASE OF THE U.S. DROUGHT MONITOR...ABNORMALLY 
DRY TO MODERATE DROUGHT CONDITIONS WERE INDICATED ACROSS THE ENTIRE 
TRI STATE AREA. IMPACTS FROM THIS DROUGHT WERE MAINLY HYDROLOGICAL. 

THE DROUGHT MONITOR FOCUSES ON BROAD-SCALE CONDITIONS. LOCAL 
CONDITIONS MAY VARY.

D0 -- ABNORMALLY DRY OR RECOVERING FROM DROUGHT
D1 -- MODERATE DROUGHT
D2 -- SEVERE DROUGHT
D3 -- EXTREME DROUGHT
D4 -- EXCEPTIONAL DROUGHT

PERCENT NORMALS OF PRECIPITATION ARE THE AVERAGE ACROSS A COUNTY FOR 
THE INDICATED PERIOD. LOCAL CONDITIONS MAY VARY. A VALUE OF 100 
WOULD BE THE CLIMATOLOGICAL NORMAL...A VALUE OF 50 WOULD BE HALF OF 
NORMAL AND CONSIDERED DRY...WHILE A VALUE OF 200 WOULD BE TWICE 
NORMAL AND CONSIDERED VERY WET.

NO KNOWN ACTIONS AT THIS TIME.

.CLIMATE SUMMARY...

THUNDERSTORM DAYS WERE LESS NUMEROUS IN THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER BUT 
WERE STILL MAINLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MAJORITY OF RAINFALL DURING 
THE MONTH. MOST OF EXTREME EASTERN COLORADO AND WESTERN KANSAS 
RECEIVED ONLY A COUPLE OF DAYS OF MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION. THE MOST 
SIGNIFICANT RAINS OF THE MONTH IN THIS AREA OCCURRED ON THE 21ST 
WITH GOODLAND AND BURLINGTON RECORDING 0.69 INCHES AND 0.64 INCHES 
RESPECTIVELY. GOODLAND ENDED THE MONTH WITH 1.03 INCHES OF 
PRECIPITATION...0.09 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. MEANWHILE BURLINGTON ENDED 
THE MONTH BELOW NORMAL ONCE AGAIN...WITH ONLY 7.16 INCHES MEASURED 
SO FAR THIS YEAR. FURTHER EASTWARD...RAINFALL WAS EXPERIENCED MORE 
OFTEN DURING THE MONTH...RESULTING IN MOST LOCATIONS TOTALLING ABOVE 
NORMAL VALUES FOR SEPTEMBER. HILL CITY AND MCCOOK RECEIVED THE 
LARGEST TOTAL OF PRECIPITATION ON THE 9TH WITH 1.89 INCHES AND 0.89 
INCHES RESPECTIVELY. HILL CITY ENDED THE MONTH WITH 2.38 INCHES WITH 
MCCOOK NOT FAR BEHIND WITH 2.35 INCHES. COOP REPORTS DURING THE 
MONTH FROM THE ENTIRE AREA WERE SIMILAR IN PATTERN TO THE STATIONS 
MENTIONED ABOVE. NORMAL PRECIPITATION FOR THE REGION RANGES FROM 
SLIGHTLY ABOVE ONE INCH IN THE WESTERN PORTION TO SLIGHTLY BELOW TWO 
INCHES IN THE EASTERN PORTION.
