...SHORT TERM DRYNESS IN SOME AREAS...

.SYNOPSIS...

IN THE JULY 31ST RELEASE OF THE U.S. DROUGHT MONITOR...ABNORMALLY 
DRY CONDITIONS WERE INDICATED ALONG THE KANSAS AND COLORADO BORDER. 
IMPACTS WERE PRIMARILY AGRICULTURAL. ELSEWHERE...NO DROUGHT 
CONDITIONS WERE INDICATED ACROSS THE TRI STATE AREA. 

THE DROUGHT MONITOR FOCUSES ON BROAD-SCALE CONDITIONS. LOCAL 
CONDITIONS MAY VARY.

D0 -- ABNORMALLY DRY OR RECOVERING FROM DROUGHT
D1 -- MODERATE DROUGHT
D2 -- SEVERE DROUGHT
D3 -- EXTREME DROUGHT
D4 -- EXCEPTIONAL DROUGHT

PERCENT NORMALS OF PRECIPITATION ARE THE AVERAGE ACROSS A COUNTY FOR 
THE INDICATED PERIOD. LOCAL CONDITIONS MAY VARY. A VALUE OF 100 
PERCENT WOULD BE THE CLIMATOLOGICAL NORMAL...A VALUE OF 50 PERCENT 
WOULD BE HALF OF NORMAL AND CONSIDERED DRY...WHILE A VALUE OF 200

.CLIMATE SUMMARY...

SPORADIC THUNDERSTORM COVERAGE DURING THE MONTH OF JULY BROUGHT 
LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL TO SOME LOCATIONS...BUT OVERALL THE PATTERN 
WAS BELOW NORMAL FOR THE THIRD MONTH IN A ROW. THUNDERSTORMS WHICH 
BEGAN NEAR THE FRONT RANGE OF THE ROCKIES REACHED PARTS OF FAR 
EASTERN COLORADO...WHERE MONTHLY PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS WERE NEAR OR 
SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL WEST OF A WRAY TO FLAGLER LINE. MOST AREAS IN 
SOUTHWEST NEBRASKA RECEIVED MUCH ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL DURING THE 
MONTH...UP TO 3 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. FINALLY...IN NORTHWEST KANSAS 
MOST AREAS WERE BELOW NORMAL...EXCEPT ALONG AND EAST OF HIGHWAY 83 
WHICH WAS UP TO 2 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. WEST OF HIGHWAY 83 AND INTO 
EXTREME EASTERN COLORADO...THE DRY SPELL CONTINUED. THERE WERE A FEW 
ISOLATED CASES OF HEAVY RAINFALL...ATWOOD WAS SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL 
FOR EXAMPLE...BUT MOST LOCATIONS WERE 1 TO 3 INCHES BELOW NORMAL FOR 
THE MONTH OF JULY.
