First Severe Weather Event of 2002 Brings Damaging Winds and Hail to Central and Southeast Kansas. (3/9/2002)

By: Jim Caruso and Robb Lawson

Numerous reports of hail and high winds impacted Central and Southeast Kansas Friday Evening, March 8th.

Scattered severe thunderstorms erupted along an arctic cold front that was draped across central Kansas early Friday Evening (see image 1). From approximately 6 pm through 730 pm, the scattered severe thunderstorms produced primarily large hail ranging from dime size to quarter. One exception was a report of golfball size hail, 5 miles west of Arlington in Reno County.

Shortly after 730 pm, the arctic front began surging southeastward across south central Kansas. As this happened, the scattered storms began to merge into an organized squall line (see image 2). The squall line produced a mix of large hail and damaging wind gusts as it progressed across south central Kansas (see image 3). The highest severe thunderstorm wind gusts were 87 mph in the town of Winfield in Cowley County and 74 mph in Arkansas City. A semi was overturned at mile marker 73 on the Kansas Turnpike in Butler County, according to law enforcement. Large power poles were knocked down in Potwin of Butler County.

As the arctic cold front began to accelerate its southeastward movement, the line of severe thunderstorms raced across southeastern Kansas between about 10 pm and Midnight CST. This resulted in several reports of downed power poles and trees. Significant wind damage occurred in the town of Coffeyville of Montgomery County. A large section of roof was blown off a church (see image 4, image 5, image 6) onto an adjacent building, and part of a stadium was damaged (see image 7). A few downtown buildings also had windows broken due to the strong wind gusts.

The severe thunderstorms produced over 65 severe reports in central and southeast Kansas. See below. In addition, immediately behind the front and severe storms, northwest winds were at speeds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts around 50 mph. Brief periods of light snow, sleet or freezing rain also occurred, particularly in central Kansas.
