Two Days of Severe Weather (6/14/2002)

By: Robb Lawson

June 11th and 12th prove to be busy severe weather days across Central and Eastern Kansas.

Between the afternoon of June 11th and the evening of June 12th, the National Weather Service in Wichita issued 72 warnings. These warnings included severe thunderstorms warnings, tornado warnings and flash flood warnings.

Several Days prior to this event, persistent southerly winds transported plenty of gulf moisture into the plains. But warm air in the mid levels of the atmosphere inhibited thunderstorm development. It would take the presence of a weak cold front to finally initiate thunderstorms during the afternoon of June 11th.

The first storms developed over Russell county and eventually moved into Lincoln and Ellsworth counties. Along with producing baseball size hail in the town of Wilson and 80 mph winds, this storm also spawned a brief tornado north of I70 in Lincoln county. Image 1 shows this powerful storm around the time of tornado touchdown. Even though more storms developed later, this supercell proved to be the strongest of the day.

Storms once again fired ahead of the advancing cold front during the evening of June 12th. Just as the previous day, numerous reports of large hail were received. There were also a few reports of a few very brief tornado touchdowns which caused no damage. Image 2 is a hand analyzed surface map a few hours prior to thunderstorm development. Image 3 is a radar image during the peak of the event.

Here is a long list of severe weather events from these two days:
