Severe Thunderstorms Strike Southeastern Kansas (3/14/2003)

By: Jim Caruso & Robb Lawson

Severe thunderstorms brought mainly large hail and heavy rainfall to portions of Southeastern Kansas Wednesday Evening, March 12th.

The severe weather developed just south of a warm front, that was draped across the Flint Hills and Southeastern Kansas early Wednesday Evening. The storms initially developed in small clusters over Greenwood and Elk Counties. One supercell thunderstorm, which formed shortly before 6 pm C.S.T., tracked from northern Greenwood County across Woodson and Allen Counties, dropping hail up to golfball size throughout much of its lifetime. Image 1 shows this strong supercell thunderstorm near the peak of its life cycle. Image 2 is the velocity imagery for this same storm. Note the red and green pixels close to each other, indicating strong rotation within this storm. The clusters of storms eventually merged into a line of storms as it moved across Neosho, Labette, Montgomery and Chautauqua Counties later Wednesday evening. Image 3 shows how this event evolved into a line of severe storms.
