April Went Out With a Bang across South Central and Southeast Kansas (5/2/2003)

By: Robb Lawson

Many factors came together on the evening of April 30th to spark severe weather across South Central and Southeast Kansas.

The last day of April was a very busy night in the weather department across much of South Central and Southeast Kansas. During the day of April 30th southerly winds delivered rich gulf moisture into the Central Plains. At the same time, surface low pressure was developing and intensifying over North Central Kansas. A cold front trailed south from this low and progressed eastward through the afternoon hours. Image 1 is an analyzed surface map from 4pm on April 30th showing the cold front in blue, trailing from low pressure over North Central Kansas in red.

Storms erupted around 7 pm just east of Wichita as this cold front encountered greater moisture. Image 2 is a radar image from a couple hours after the storms initiated. Storms once again redeveloped later in the evening as lower level winds strengthened and fed additional moisture into the area. Image 3 is another radar image taken at around 1:30 am.

The National Weather Service in Wichita issued around 40 warnings through this event. Severe weather reports ranged from golf ball size hail to a brief tornado touchdown over Cowley and Chautauqua counties. Image 4 is a map of the severe weather events from the evening of April 30th.
