Severe Storms Ignite Across South Central and Southeast Kansas (6/26/2003)

By: Robb Lawson

A strong cold front sparks severe storms producing large hail, damaging winds and heavy rainfall.

A cold front made its way into South Central Kansas as the afternoon hours of June 25th approached. Ahead of this cold front, an unseasonably moist Gulf air mass was in place. Some of the dewpoints ahead of this front were in the mid and upper 70s, which is considered very moist, even for locations along the Gulf Coast. Image 1 is a surface map from 1 pm CDT on June 25th. Note the blue cold front arching through South Central Kansas.

Severe storms fired along this cold front around 2 pm CDT. Image 2 is a radar snapshot at the time storms fired along this front. These storms eventually formed into a line and swept through Southeast Kansas, exiting Kansas around 8 pm CDT. Image 3 shows this line of storms just before exiting the Sunflower State.

Numerous reports of large hail and damaging winds were reported across the area through the afternoon and evening hours of June 25th. See below for a list of severe storm reports. The large hail and strong winds were accompanied by heavy rainfall. Image 4 is the storm total precipitation estimate from the Wichita National Weather Service Radar.
