Summer Goes out With a Bang!! (9/23/2003)

The last official day of summer brought numerous severe storms to Central and South Central Kansas.

Thunderstorms fired a few hours after sunset over North Central Kansas as a strong upper level disturbance tracked across the area. These storms followed the upper flow and moved into Central Kansas around 1 am Monday September 22nd. As these storms tracked southeast they grew in intensity and also expanded in areal coverage. Image 1 is a radar image at 517 am and shows a severe storm northeast of Wichita and another southeast of Hutchinson. Both of these storms produced large hail near the time of the radar image.

Fifteen severe thunderstorm warnings were issued between 1 and 6 am Monday morning. These severe storms resulted in 20 reports of hail larger than dimes and 3 reports of winds around 60 mph. Here is a list of severe weather reports:
