Winter Returns with Heavy Snow Across Southeast Kansas (1/11/2006)

By: Paul Howerton

Over a foot of snow fell in some parts of southeast Kansas on Tuesday January 10th.

The snow began during the evening in south central Kansas. The system continued to intensify as it encountered more moist and unstable air to the east. One distinct band of snow occurred from near South Haven to near Winfield. However the heaviest band of snow occurred from Howard to near Fredonia to Iola. The heaviest snow occurred across northern and western sections of Wilson County. A number of traffic accidents were reported in southeast Kansas as a result of the slick roads.

Visible satellite imagery (image 1 and image 2) shows the snow across south central Kansas. Radar estimated rainfall shows the swaths of heaviest snow (see image 3). Due to the instability across southeast Kansas, the heaviest snow occurred in narrow bands, with amounts sometimes varying greatly over short distances.
