Severe Straight Line Winds Pummel Portions of Central and South Central Kansas! (6/17/2006)

By: Robb Lawson

Severe storms fired over Western Kansas during the late afternoon hours of Friday June 16th. These storms progressed east through the evening hours and eventually worked their way into Central and South Central Kansas overnight. Severe straight line winds were the primary threat with these storms with wind gusts ranging from 60 to 80 mph.

Around 9 pm severe winds significantly damaged a building and knocked down numerous trees in the town of Cunningham, in Kingman County. At 9:35 pm a wind gust in excess of 60 mph tore a roof off an apartment building in South Hutchinson with this same line of storms producing winds around 80 mph across portions of Wichita causing significant tree damage. Finally around 10:30 pm this line of storms affected Marion County where severe winds blew down power poles near Hillsboro cutting off power to most of the city. In addition these same storms tore a roof off a garage in the town of Marion.

Image 1 is a radar image of the line of storms around 10:00 pm as they made their way through Central and South Central Kansas. Note the outflow boundary just ahead of the storms indicating the leading edge of the severe winds.
