...WICHITA REACHES 100 DEGREES FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS YEAR...

THE TEMPERATURE TODAY(7/16) AT WICHITA'S MID-CONTINENT AIRPORT REACHED 105 DEGREES THIS AFTERNOON. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WICHITA HAS REACHED 100 DEGREES THIS YEAR. EVEN MORE IMPRESSIVE...THIS IS THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE RECORDED IN WICHITA SINCE JULY 14 2003...WHEN THE TEMPERATURE SOARED TO 109 DEGREES.

THROUGH 1948...THE NORMAL DATE FOR WICHITA TO REACH 100 DEGREES IS JUNE 29TH. SO EVEN THOUGH TEMPERATURES HAVE BEEN VERY WARM THE LAST SEVERAL DAYS...IT TOOK LONGER THAN NORMAL TO REACH 100 DEGREES.

THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF DAYS PER YEAR WITH HIGHS GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO 100 DEGREES IS 10.5...WITH AN AVERAGE OF 1.3 DAYS IN JUNE...4.4 DAYS IN JULY...4.2 DAYS IN AUGUST...AND 0.6 DAYS IN SEPTEMBER.

THE GREATEST NUMBER OF DAYS WITH HIGHS GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO 100 DEGREES:

RANK YEAR NUMBER OF DAYS ---- ---- -------------- 1. 1936 50 2. 1980 46 3. 1978 42 1954 42 5. 1934 40

ON JULY 2 1980...THE HIGH WAS 98 DEGREES. HAD THE HIGH REACHED 100...A NEW ALL-TIME RECORD FOR CONSECUTIVE HIGH TEMPERATURES GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO 100 DEGREES WOULD HAVE BEEN SET AT 27. THIS WOULD HAVE SHATTERED THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 20 DAYS SET FROM AUGUST 7TH - 26TH 1936.

SINCE JULY 1888...WHEN CLIMATE RECORDS COMMENCED IN WICHITA...ONLY 7 YEARS FAILED TO REACH 100 DEGREES: 1889...1891...1904...1906... 1908...1915...AND 1927.
