WICHITA EXPERIENCES ITS WARMEST AND DRIEST JULY SINCE 2003 (8/1/2006)

JULY 2006 PROVED TO BE WARMER AND DRIER THAN NORMAL FOR WICHITA...AS WELL AS MOST OTHER LOCATIONS ACROSS THE AREA.

THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 83.6 DEGREES WAS 2.6 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL...MAKING IT THE WARMEST JULY SINCE 2003...WHEN THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE REACHED 84.3 DEGREES.

TRIPLE DIGIT HEAT MADE SEVERAL APPEARANCES THIS PAST JULY. EIGHT DAYS REPORTED HIGH TEMPERATURES 100 DEGREES OR HIGHER...THE HIGHEST JULY TOTAL SINCE 2003...WHEN THE MERCURY SOARED INTO THE TRIPLE DIGITS 11 DAYS. WICHITA NORMALLY HITS 100 DEGREES OR HIGHER 4.4 DAYS EACH JULY...AND 10.5 DAYS ANNUALLY. SINCE RECORDS BEGAN IN 1888...JULY 1980 HOLDS THE JULY TRIPLE DIGIT RECORD AT 24 DAYS.

THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE RECORDED AT WICHITA MID-CONTINENT AIRPORT THIS PAST JULY WAS 109 DEGREES ON BOTH THE 19TH AND 20TH. THIS WAS THE WARMEST JULY TEMPERATURE SINCE 2003...WHEN THE THE MERCURY ALSO SOARED TO 109 ON THE 14TH. BEFORE 2003...THE LAST TIME A JULY TEMPERATURE REACHED AT LEAST 109 DEGREES WAS 1986...WHEN THE TEMPERATURE REACHED 110 ON THE 30TH.

DUE TO THE HOT CONDITIONS...BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION PREVAILED FOR WICHITA...AS WELL AS SEVERAL OTHER LOCATIONS ACROSS THE AREA. WICHITA MID- CONTINENT AIRPORT REPORTED 2.16 INCHES OF MOISTURE THIS PAST JULY...1.15 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THIS IS THE DRIEST JULY SINCE 2003...WHEN ONLY 0.47 INCHES OCCURRED.
