Widespread Light to Moderate Snow Affects the Area! (12/17/2008)

By: Andy Kleinsasser, Meteorologist

Up to 5 inches of snow fell across portions of central Kansas on December 15th.

Widespread light snow spread north across Kansas on December 15th and 16th. The snow began across portions of south-central and southeast Kansas during the evening hours on the 15th, spreading north and reaching central Kansas shortly after midnight. Accumulating snow persisted through the morning of the 16th across a good portion of central and south-central Kansas, before ending during the afternoon hours. The highest accumulations occurred across central Kansas, where amounts reached 5 inches for several locations. Accumulations were lowest over southeast Kansas, where 1 to 2 inches occurred. Additionally, areas of light freezing rain and freezing drizzle laid down a light glaze of ice across portions of southeast Kansas on the 16th, as warmer air aloft spread over the sub-freezing air at the surface.

See Image 1 for a total accumulations map.
