A winter storm developed over the desert southwest and moved northeast through the plains from February 20th through February 21st. This system brought a mix of snow, sleet, rain, and freezing rain to central and south central Kansas, while southeast Kansas received mostly rain (see map below). Precipitation started out as mostly rain and freezing rain on February 20th, and there were ice accumulations ranging from 1/4 to 1/2 inch generally along highway 50. Slick roads, along with numerous traffic accidents were reported across much of central Kansas by the evening of February 20th. Precipitation changed to snow in central Kansas overnight, where 1 to 4 inches of snow accumulated (see map below).
