Severe Weather Hits South Central Kansas

on June 9th, 2011

What Happened:   An upper level storm system moving over the northern plains helped to dislodge a persistent ridge of high pressure over the southern and central plains states.  This aided in the development of severe thunderstorms along a slow moving cold front during the afternoon and evening hours on Thursday, June 9th 2011.

Background: Scattered thunderstorms developed along a slow moving cold front over south central Kansas during the afternoon hours before spreading east across southeast Kansas during the evening and overnight hours.  The storms quickly became severe with hail up to the size of softballs reported in Mount Hope and a brief tornado observed north of Colwich.  These storms continued to move east with widespread damaging winds and large hail reported across the Wichita metro area.  In addition, several wall clouds were observed across Sedgwick  County with locally heavy rain leading to localized flash flooding.
