Two separate severe weather events affected central Illinois on September 19.  The first one affected areas from near and west of the Illinois River valley to around Lincoln, very early in the day.  The second severe weather event began developing in the mid-afternoon hours around Macomb, and moved eastward through early evening.  As part of this event, additional thunderstorms developed a bit further south, and tracked along the I-72 corridor.
 

Daily weather map from 7 am CDT The national weather map at 7 am CDT shows low pressure in southeast Minnesota, with a trailing cold front into Kansas, and a warm front extending southeast into Illinois.
Local severe weather reports on 9/19/2005 This map shows a plot of severe weather reports around central and southeast Illinois.  The storms from the pre-dawn hours produced hail up to 1 inch in diameter, and tree damage. Most of the reports were from the afternoon and evening storms.  The storms during the afternoon hours produced large hail and damaging winds, but evening reports were mostly wind damage reports.  Click here for a specific list of storm reports.
Rainfall reports ending 7 am CDT Tuesday, Sep. 20 Some much-needed rainfall occurred across portions of central Illinois.  This map shows the 24-hour rainfall ending Tuesday morning, Sep. 20.  Much of central and southeast Illinois received at least 3/4 inch of rain.  Lawrenceville, in southeast Illinois, received close to 3 inches, with 2-1/4 inches near Canton in west central Illinois, and 1.5 inches in Peoria.
