Major flash flooding occurred in the Chicago metropolitan area. Much of the flooding was in the western and northern suburbs. Thunderstorms repeatedly moved across the area, dumping heavy rain. O'Hare Airport reported 9.35 inches of rain in an 18 hour period. The airport was only accessible by air, as flooding blocked all surface approaches. However, thousands of people did manage to leave the airport by walking down the Kennedy Expressway.
