Ruth Everhart - 55 Years of Service Award

Ruth Everhart - 55 Years of Service Award

RUTH EVERHART OF RURAL SEYMOUR RECEIVED THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE/S BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AWARD FOR 55 YEARS OF FAITHFUL COOPERATIVE WEATHER SERVICE.  MRS. EVERHART IS THE FIRST INDIANA COOPERATIVE OBSERVER TO RECEIVE THIS AWARD THAT WAS STARTED IN 1999 TO HONOR OBSERVERS THAT REACH THE 55 YEAR MILESTONE. THE PRESENTATION WAS HELD AS A "SURPRISE" IN THE INDIANAPOLIS WEATHER OFFICE.

MRS. EVERHART IS AN EXCELLENT OBSERVER.  SHE RECEIVED THE HOLM AWARD IN SEPTEMBER 1973.  THE HOLM AWARD IS GIVEN ONLY TO ABOUT 25 COOPERATIVE OBSERVERS PER YEAR FOR EXCELLENCE IN WEATHER OBSERVING. IN ADDITION SHE HAS RECEIVED SERVICE AWARDS FROM 15 TO 50 YEARS INCLUDING THE STOLL AWARD WHICH MARKS 50 YEARS OF SERVICE.

MRS. EVERHART BEGAN HER WEATHER OBSERVER DUTIES ON NOVEMBER 1 1947. BECAUSE HER HUSBAND WAS EMPLOYED BY THE POST OFFICE, HE COULD NO LONGER "WORK" FOR THE WEATHER BUREAU AT THAT TIME. LITTLE DID MRS. EVERHART KNOW THAT SHE WOULD STILL BE TAKING WEATHER OBSERVATIONS MORE THAN 55 YEARS LATER.  MRS. EVERHART IS ONLY ONE OF LESS THAN 5 CITIZENS OF INDIANA TO REACH THE 55 YEAR MILESTONE.

MRS. EVERHART OBSERVES MAXIMUM AND MINIMUM TEMPERATURES...RAINFALL AND RIVER STAGE DAILY.  DURING THE WINTER SEASON SNOWFALL...SNOW DEPTH AND WATER EQUIVALENT MEASUREMENTS ARE TAKEN. FOR MANY YEARS MRS. EVERHART HAS BEEN THE "OFFICIAL" RIVER AND WEATHER WATCHER FOR THE SEYMOUR AREA.  DURING FLOODING AND UNUSUAL WEATHER SHE IS IN DAILY CONTACT WITH THE WEATHER OFFICE AT INDIANAPOLIS.

THE AWARD CEREMONY WAS ATTENDED BY A DOZEN STAFF MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE WITH THE AWARD BEING PRESENTED BY DENNIS MCCARTHY, CENTRAL REGION DIRECTOR.
