September 20 2002 Tornados

In response to the Friday, September 20th tornadoes across Central Indiana, the National Weather Service conducted aerial and ground surveys. The surveys indicate that one thunderstorm produced at least three tornadoes. The first tornado struck in Southwest Indiana, near Poseyville and was an F2 on the Fujita Scale. The second tornado was also an F2 and struck near Monroe City. The third, and long lived tornado started near Ellettsville and tracked Northeast through Martinsville and Indianapolis to north of Anderson. The greatest damage from this tornado occurred near Ellettsville, Martinsville, Greenwood, Southport, and Beech Grove as the damage was rated F3 on the Fujita Scale. F1 Damage was found at McCordsville, the west side of Anderson, and northeast of Alexandria to near Hartford City. Click on a point along the path of the tornado below to view damage pictures.
