1870 -- President Grant signed a measure creating what would become the National Weather Service.
1899 -- Fort Wayne had a low of -19° and a high of -7°. Angola fell to -20°. This air mass was entrenched over much of the United States was of the Rockies for several days. On the 12th Fort Worth, Texas dropped to 8° and Charleston, South Carolina received four inches of snow. Ice floes blocked the Mississippi River at New Orleans, which has happened only one other time (February 13, 1784).
1909 -- Severe ice storm did heavy damage to trees and telegraph lines.
1933 -- Albion fell to -18°, Plymouth to -20°.
1982 -- Fort Wayne's deepest snow cover on record: 20".
2010 -- A strong winter storm moved from the Plains into the Midwest, bringing a round of heavy snow to much of the region. Snowfall amounts generally ranged between 5" and 11", with the heavier amounts reported in far northwest Ohio and south-central Lower Michigan.
