On this day in weather history...

1776 -- At 2pm, when the Declaration of Independence was being signed by Thomas Jefferson, it was 76° according to the thermometer he had bought that morning. Skies were cloudy.

1938 -- The Wabash River at Terre Haute, Indiana crested 7 feet above flood stage.

1956 -- 1.23" of rain fell on Unionville, Maryland in one minute.

1957 -- A tornado damaged the Williams County courthouse.

1969 -- A tornado moved southeast across northeast Hillsdale County from Jonesville to northwest of Hudson.

1998 -- Flash flooding in Peru, Indiana reached car rooftops. Homes were evacuated.Flooding closed part of IN 25 in Fulton County Indiana. Floodwaters two feet deep stalled cars in Blackford County. 81 mph winds blew through Willshire, Ohio.

2001 -- Hail one inch in diameter fell one mile south of Knox, five miles east of Knox, and two miles south-southeast of Kewanna. Trees were blown onto power lines two miles north of Logansport.

2003 -- F1 tornado traveled from two miles southeast of Plum Tree (Huntington County) to three miles south of Liberty Center (Wells County) damaging two homes, trees, and a power pole. 81mph winds blew large trees down one mile north of Converse (Miami County). Hail 1.75 inches in diameter fell one mile north of Decatur. A tree fell on a mobile home five miles north of Rochester crushing and killing a 27-year-old man. A home one mile north of Chili (Miami County) lost its roof. A roof was removed and a grain silo blown down two miles northwest of Poneto (Wells County). Flash flooding occurred in the counties of Adams, Wells, Miami, Wabash, Jay, and Wells. Streets were closed in Berne (Adams County) due to the flooding. Water was waist-deep in Bluffton. IN 218 was closed near La Fontaine (Wabash County) due to flooding. Water was a foot deep on streets in Uniondale (Wells County).
