IWX Snow Spotters

Welcome to the NWS Northern Indiana Snow Spotter Page!

Our goal is to expand the existing snow spotter network in order to receive more real time and snowfall information, which will in turn lead to better forecasts.

Winter Weather Spotter Presentation

View our snow spotter training slide show for a review of what we covered in the training presentations we gave last fall. The training covers NWS winter weather products, types of winter precipitation, how to properly measure snow, and some very impressive snow pictures!

When are Snow Spotter Training Sessions Held

Training sessions are typically held during the late fall, from late October through early December. Due to the reduced volume of spotters we see for this program compared to the convective season training, we setup regional training sessions in a variety of locations with the intention to keep any comutting time limited to an hour or less. Check on our Events Calendar link under Local Information on the left side of the screen this fall for a list of snow spotter training locations. Class locations and times will be determined during the month of of October.

Why we need more Snow Spotters

We are in need of spotters across our 37 counties of responsibility. Major population areas, such as Fort Wayne and South Bend, have decent coverage of spotters, however increased spotter coverage is needed in rural areas and small towns, where such things as blowing and drifting can be a larger concern due to open fields, etc.
