On this day in weather history...

1902 -- A severe thunderstorm did much damage in Wabash.

1964 -- A very small tornado moved from near Ainger to near Bridgewater Center in Williams County.

1996 -- The fastest wind recorded at the South Bend National Weather Service occurred: 92 mph.

2001 -- Hail 1.75" in diameter in South Bend. Hail 2" in diameter at Grabill (Allen County Indiana), 5 miles north of Columbia City, and Woodburn (Allen County Indiana). A 24-year-old man was struck by lightning at Flexco Products at 2415 Bryant Street in Elkhart. A mobile home was knocked onto its side on CR 427 near Auburn. 75 mph winds were reported two miles south of Auburn. Winds tore the roof off of a barn on DeKalb CR 60 near Meese Chapel UMC. Winds also blew down tents that had been set up at Kruse Auction park in preparation for the Labor Day weekend classic car auction. A Mishawaka man was indirectly hit by lightning while sitting on a vinyl chair on his apartment balcony...the lightning struck the gutter above him. Lightning struck a house on CR 900S in Kosciusko County...when the bolt hit the home items were knocked off the walls and electrical sockets were blown out of the wall, to the tune of $50,000 damage. Lightning destroyed a barn near 450S and County Farm Road in Kosciusko County. Lightning burned a wood-frame barn to the ground two miles northwest of Rochester. A lightning strike caused a fire at the administration building of North Central Co-Op in Wabash at the corner of Cass and Fulton streets, resulting in $500,000 damage. Hail 2.75" in diameter fell one mile west of McGill (Paulding County).

2003 -- 58 mph thunderstorm winds blew trees down throughout much of Wabash County.
