Snow Spotters

Welcome to the NWS Northern Indiana Snow Spotter Page!

Our goal is to expand the existing snow spotter network in order to receive more real time and snowfall information, which will in turn lead to better forecasts.

Winter Weather Spotter Presentation

View our snow spotter training slide show for a review of what we covered in the training presentations we gave last fall. The training covers NWS winter weather products, types of winter precipitation, how to properly measure snow, and some very impressive snow pictures!

Why we need more Snow Spotters

map

Click on the thumbnail image above for a view of our existing snow spotter network in 2002. As you can see, the snow spotters are concentrated around big cities such as Fort Wayne and South Bend, with very few spotters in rural areas. Our goal is to "fill in the map" with snow spotters, especially in rural areas where reports can be scarce.
