1965 -- Fort Wayne had its coldest August temperature: 38°. South Bend did too, at 40°.

1986 -- Goshen dropped to 37°.

1997 -- Strong non-thunderstorm winds blew trees down in Hillsdale County, especially along Vicary Road, and felled a tree landed on two cars in Marcellus Michigan.

2005 -- Hurricane Katrina makes second landfall over southeast Louisiana as a strong and deadly category 4 hurricane...inundating southeast Lousiana including the city of New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast with a catastrophic storm surge with waves in excess of 30 feet. Over 1000 people died in the storm mainly due to drowning in the storm surge flooding with storm losses estimated in the hundreds of billions making Katrina the mostly costly natural disaster in modern times.
