1871 -- First regularly scheduled forecast issued by the Signal Corps (to become the National Weather Service), from Cincinnati.

1884 -- In the "Enigma Outbreak", sixty tornadoes swept through the southeast U.S. killing 800 people.

1888 -- Along its 62-mile long path, a tornado hit Mount Vernon, Illinois, and resulted in 16 deaths.
