Severe Weather & Flash Flooding
Occurred on September 22, 2010

Two waves of thunderstorms crossed parts of western and north central Nebraska Wednesday as a warm front moved north across the area. The first wave of thunderstorms brought hail to the north central part of the state during the morning, even as dense fog reduced visibility to one quarter of a mile in places. The largest reported hail was tennis ball size in rural Holt County, 4 miles north of Inman, at 11:05 a.m. CDT. This first round of storms fed off of warm and humid air that was in place a few thousand feet above the ground, so they were severe despite the cool, foggy morning.

The second wave of storms formed in the warm and humid air south of the warm front during the late afternoon and evening. One storm was severe in Custer County, where 80 mph winds and quarter size hail were reported a few miles south of Broken Bow. Very heavy rain also accompanied this second round of storms.  Streets and homes were flooded in and near Broken Bow, and some roads were also flooded in rural Custer County.
