Strong Winds Occurred on February 13th, 2011

Strong northwest winds occurred across the region on February 13th as deep low pressure moved across southern Canada.  The winds resulted from a significant pressure gradient between the low pressure system and a high pressure system centered over western Colorado. Northwest winds gusted over 40 mph across much of western and north central Nebraska. The highest wind gust measured by airport sensors in the area was 53 mph at Thedford.

February 13th was also the warmest day in the area since November. Highs were well over 20 degrees above normal for this time of the year. A new daily record high of 72 degrees was even set at Imperial. The old record for February 13th at Imperial was 71 degrees set in the year 1954.

Shown below are the peak wind reports from airport sensors across western and north central Nebraska, as well as high temperatures, departures from normal, and a listing of  dates when it was last this warm.
