Significant Severe Weather Occurred Sunday Afternoon and Sunday Night

Heavy Rain Also Fell and Produced Flash Flooding

Severe thunderstorms brought very large hail, destructive straight line winds, very heavy rainfall, and even funnel clouds and a tornado to parts of the area on Sunday, June 19th, 2011. The storms were most numerous over southwestern Nebraska from Imperial east to Hayes Center and Stockville. In that part of southwestern Nebraska, several different intense thunderstorms moved eastward over the same general area from the late evening hours into the early morning hours of Monday, June 20th, 2011.  The largest hail reported was baseball size, which was reported 10 miles northwest of Imperial in the early evening, and again with a different storm in Champion at 9:25 p.m. MDT.  The highest reported wind gust was 77 mph in Imperial at 8:23 p.m. MDT.  The storms also produced very heavy rainfall in some places, with as much as 5.20 inches of rain reported in Hayes Center. Heavy rainfall also caused flash flooding in the Stapleton and Merna areas. In fact, Nebraska State Highway 92 was under water from 6 miles southeast of Stapleton to 10 miles southeast of Stapleton on Sunday evening, and several county roads in that area were washed out.
