Large Hail and Damaging Winds Occurred Thursday

Scattered thunderstorms formed in the Nebraska Panhandle ahead of a cold front during the afternoon hours of Thursday, June 30th, 2011. The storms then moved northeast into a very hot and humid air mass across western and north central Nebraska, which allowed some of them to become severe. A pair of storms brought ping pong ball size hail to the Chappell and Big Springs areas. One of those same storms later produced winds estimated at 70 mph at a spot 10 miles east-northeast of Arthur.  A separate line of storms then developed over Sheridan and Cherry Counties during the evening, and produced damaging winds and some hail as it raced to the northeast. The winds were estimated at 80 mph 10 miles southwest of Cody, where part of the roof was torn off a house, another wood structure was destroyed, and significant tree damage was reported. The Valentine airport also recorded a wind gust of 72 mph with those storms at 9:03 p.m. CDT.
