APRIL 2011
COLDER AND WETTER THAN NORMAL FOR NORTH PLATTE
COLDER AND SLIGHTLY DRIER THAN NORMAL FOR VALENTINE
APRIL WAS DOMINATED BY TWO DIFFERENT PATTERNS. THE FIRST HALF OF 
THE MONTH WAS WARM WITH SEVERAL WEAK DISTURBANCES BRING ONLY
LIGHT PRECIPITATION. THEN A MAJOR SPRING STORM SYSTEM MOVED
ACROSS THE REGION ON THE 14TH AND 15TH...BRINGING RAIN AND SNOW
WITH SOME AREAS ALSO REPORTING THUNDER. THIS CAUSED A SHIFT IN
THE PATTERN WHICH BECAME COOLER AND MORE ACTIVE WITH MOST DAYS
RECORDING BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURE WHICH LASTED THROUGH THE END
OF THE MONTH. DURING THE LAST 2 WEEKS ONLY ONE DAY...THE
29TH...DID TEMPERATURES WARM ABOVE NORMAL FOR VALENTINE AND NORTH
PLATTE.
 
FOR NORTH PLATTE...THE AVERAGE DAILY MEAN TEMPERATURE FOR APRIL
WAS 46.8 DEGREES...WHICH WAS 1.3 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 48.1
DEGREES. THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 60.3 DEGREES
WHICH WAS 2.4 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 62.7 DEGREES. THE
AVERAGE DAILY LOW TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 33.4 DEGREES
WHICH WAS EQUAL TO THE NORMAL VALUE. ONE TEMPERATURE RECORD WAS
REACHED AT NORTH PLATTE IN APRIL. ON APRIL 9 A LOW OF ONLY 50
DEGREES TIED THE RECORD FOR HIGHEST DAILY MINIMUM...PREVIOUSLY
SET IN 1943 AND 1887.
 
FOR VALENTINE...THE AVERAGE DAILY MEAN TEMPERATURE FOR APRIL WAS
45.4 DEGREES...WHICH WAS 0.7 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 46.1
DEGREES. THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 56.8
DEGREES...WHICH WAS 3.0 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 59.8 DEGREES.
THE AVERAGE DAILY MINIMUM TEMPERATURE WAS 34.0 DEGREES...WHICH
WAS 1.6 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 32.4 DEGREES. NO TEMPERATURE
RECORDS WERE SET DURING THE MONTH AT VALENTINE.
 
FOR NORTH PLATTE...PRECIPITATION FOR APRIL TOTALED 2.19
INCHES...WHICH WAS 0.22 INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 1.97 INCHES.
NO DAILY PRECIPITATION RECORDS WERE SET DURING THE MONTH AT NORTH
PLATTE. SNOWFALL FOR THE MONTH TOTALED 5.0 INCHES...WHICH WAS 2.2
INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 2.8 INCHES. ONE DAILY SNOWFALL RECORD
WAS SET DURING THE MONTH AT NORTH PLATTE. ON APRIL 15 A TOTAL OF
3.9 INCHES OF SNOWFALL WAS RECORDED AT LEE BIRD FIELD. THIS BROKE
THE 1945 RECORD OF 1.5 INCHES. SNOWFALL FOR THE SEASON IS UP TO
42.6 INCHES...WHICH IS 14.3 INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 27.8
INCHES OF SNOWFALL FOR THE YEAR. THIS ALSO RANKS 10TH AS THE
SNOWIEST WINTER ON RECORD FOR NORTH PLATTE.
 
AT VALENTINE...PRECIPITATION FOR APRIL TOTALED 1.89 INCHES WHICH
WAS 0.08 INCHES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 1.97 INCHES. NO DAILY
PRECIPITATION RECORDS WERE SET DURING THE MONTH AT MILLER FIELD.
SNOWFALL TOTALED AN IMPRESSIVE 9.5 INCHES...WHICH WAS 5.1 INCHES
ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 4.4 INCHES. ON THE 15TH A TOTAL OF 4.3 INCHES
OF SNOW WAS RECORDED. THIS SET A NEW RECORD...BREAKING THE OLD
RECORD OF 4.0 INCHES SET IN 1978. THE TOTAL OF 17.3 INCHES OF
SNOW RANKS 13TH AS SNOWIEST APRIL ON RECORD FOR VALENTINE.
