COLDER AND WETTER THAN NORMAL FOR NORTH PLATTE
COLDER AND WETTER THAN NORMAL FOR VALENTINE
THE MONTH OF MAY 2011 HAD AN ACTIVE WEATHER PATTERN THAT PROMOTED 
NUMEROUS STORM SYSTEMS MOVING ACROSS THE HIGH PLAINS. A FEW OF THE
STORMS WERE STRONG AND PRODUCED VERY HEAVY RAINFALL AND GUSTY WINDS.
THE FIRST SEVERE WEATHER OUTBREAK FOR WESTERN AND NORTH CENTRAL
NEBRASKA OUTBREAK OCCURRED TOWARDS THE END OF THE MONTH...ON
MEMORIAL DAY...MAY 30. THE HIGHEST RAINFALL TOTAL REPORTED IN THE
AREA FOR THE MONTH OCCURRED AT IMPERIAL WHERE 7.06 INCHES WAS
RECORDED.

FOR NORTH PLATTE...THE AVERAGE DAILY MEAN TEMPERATURE FOR MAY WAS
55.0 DEGREES...WHICH WAS 3.3 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 58.3
DEGREES. THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 68.1 DEGREES WHICH
WAS 3.9 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 72.0 DEGREES. THE AVERAGE DAILY
LOW TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 42.0 DEGREES WHICH WAS 2.5 DEGREES
BELOW THE NORMAL 44.5 DEGREES. ONE TEMPERATURE RECORD WAS REACHED AT
NORTH PLATTE IN MAY. ON MAY 16 A LOW OF 30 DEGREES TIED THE RECORD
FOR DAILY MINIMUM...PREVIOUSLY SET IN 1923.

FOR VALENTINE...THE AVERAGE DAILY MEAN TEMPERATURE FOR MAY WAS 55.0
DEGREES...WHICH WAS 2.5 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 57.5 DEGREES.
THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 66.2 DEGREES...WHICH WAS 5.0
DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 71.2 DEGREES. THE AVERAGE DAILY MINIMUM
TEMPERATURE WAS 43.9 DEGREES...WHICH WAS 0.2 DEGREES ABOVE THE
NORMAL OF 43.7 DEGREES. NO TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE SET DURING THE
MONTH AT VALENTINE.

FOR NORTH PLATTE...PRECIPITATION FOR MAY TOTALED AN IMPRESSIVE
5.69 INCHES AT LEE BIRD FIELD...WHICH WAS 2.35 INCHES ABOVE THE
NORMAL OF 3.34 INCHES. ONE PRECIPITATION RECORD WAS SET DURING
THE MONTH OF MAY. ON MAY 12...A TOTAL OF 1.28 INCHES WAS
RECORDED...WHICH BROKE THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 0.72 INCHES SET IN
1942. THERE WERE TWO OTHER CALENDAR DAYS WHICH RECORDED MORE THAN
ONE INCH OF PRECIPITATION...HOWEVER FELL SHORT OF THE DAILY RECORD.

INCHES...THIS RANKS 11TH FOR WETTEST MAYS ON RECORD. 1962 WAS THE
WETTEST MAY ON RECORD WITH 8.01 INCHES.

AT VALENTINE...PRECIPITATION FOR MAY TOTALED 3.87 INCHES WHICH WAS
0.67 INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 3.20 INCHES. NO DAILY PRECIPITATION
RECORDS WERE SET DURING THE MONTH AT MILLER FIELD.
