APRIL 2012
  WARMER AND WETTER THAN NORMAL FOR NORTH PLATTE AND VALENTINE
APRIL CONTINUED THE TREND FROM MARCH WITH ABOVE NORMAL 
TEMPERATURES...HOWEVER THE AVERAGE HIGH TEMPERATURES ENDED COOLER
THAN THE NEAR RECORD BREAKING WARM MARCH. WHILE MARCH WAS
DOMINATED WITH DRY WEATHER...APRIL CHANGED COURSE WITH SEVERAL
SYSTEMS MOVING ACROSS THE AREA RESULTING IN WELL ABOVE NORMAL
PRECIPITATION. SEVERE WEATHER WAS AGAIN EXPERIENCED WITH ANOTHER
LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM THAT PRODUCED TORNADOES IN THE VICINITY OF
NORTH PLATTE.

FOR NORTH PLATTE...THE AVERAGE DAILY MEAN TEMPERATURE FOR APRIL
WAS 52.2 DEGREES...WHICH WAS 4.6 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 47.6
DEGREES. THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 66.5 DEGREES AND
WAS 4.3 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 62.2 DEGREES. THE AVERAGE
HIGH TEMPERATURES OF 66.5 DEGREES WAS NEARLY 3 DEGREES BELOW THE
AVERAGE HIGH RECORDED IN MARCH 2012...WHICH WAS 69.2 DEGREES. THE
AVERAGE HIGH IN APRIL IS NORMALLY 10 DEGREES WARMER THAN THE
AVERAGE HIGH IN MARCH. THE AVERAGE DAILY LOW TEMPERATURE WAS 38.0
DEGREES...WHICH WAS 5.0 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 33.0 DEGREES.
TWO NEW RECORD HIGHS WERE SET IN APRIL AT NORTH PLATTE. ON APRIL 1
A HIGH OF 88 DEGREES BROKE THE 1963 RECORD OF 84 DEGREES. THEN ON
APRIL 24 THE TEMPERATURE SOARED TO 93 DEGREES...BREAKING THE OLD
RECORD OF 88 DEGREES SET IN 1996 AND 1949.

FOR VALENTINE...THE AVERAGE DAILY MEAN TEMPERATURE FOR APRIL WAS
52.1 DEGREES...WHICH WAS 5.4 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 46.7
DEGREES. THE AVERAGE DAILY MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS
65.8 DEGREES WHICH WAS 5.5 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 60.3
DEGREES. THE AVERAGE HIGH FOR APRIL JUST BARELY BEAT THE AVERAGE
HIGH FROM MARCH...WHICH WAS 65.2 DEGREES. THE AVERAGE DAILY
MINIMUM TEMPERATURE WAS 38.3 DEGREES WHICH WAS 5.3 DEGREES ABOVE
THE NORMAL OF 33.0 DEGREES. TWO TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE
ESTABLISHED THIS APRIL AT VALENTINE...AND BOTH WERE SET ON THE
FIRST OF THE MONTH. THE HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 91 DEGREES...BREAKING
THE OLD RECORD OF 87 DEGREES SET IN 1963. THE HIGHEST DAILY
MINIMUM TEMPERATURE WAS ONLY 52 DEGREES...WHICH BROKE THE OLD
RECORD OF 50 DEGREES SET IN 1946.

PRECIPITATION IN APRIL AT LEE BIRD FIELD IN NORTH PLATTE TOTALED
3.68 INCHES...WHICH WAS 1.41 INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 2.27
INCHES. THERE WAS ONE PRECIPITATION RECORD SET IN APRIL AT LEE
BIRD FIELD. ON APRIL 15 A TOTAL OF 0.91 INCHES FELL...BREAKING THE
1939 AND 1918 RECORD OF 0.63 INCHES. SNOWFALL FOR MONTH TOTALED
ONLY A TRACE...HOWEVER THIS WAS REALLY HAIL WHICH IS RECORDED AS
SNOWFALL. RECEIVING NO SNOW IN APRIL IS RARE BUT NOT UNCOMMON AS
THERE ARE OVER 10 YEARS IN RECORDED HISTORY WHEN NO SNOW FELL
DURING THE MONTH OF APRIL. TYPICALLY APRIL IS THE LAST MONTH FOR
SNOW FOR NORTH PLATTE...AND THE 2011-2012 SEASONAL SNOWFALL TOTAL
WAS ONLY 15.6 INCHES WHICH WAS 12.9 INCHES BELOW THE NORMAL OF
28.5 INCHES.

VALENTINE PRECIPITATION TOTALED 2.99 INCHES AT MILLER FIELD FOR
THE MONTH AND WAS 0.77 INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL 2.22 INCHES. ONE
PRECIPITATION RECORD WAS SET DURING THE MONTH. ON APRIL 15 A TOTAL
OF 0.90 INCHES WAS RECORDED...WHICH BROKE THE OLD RECORD OF 0.80
SET IN 1918. NO SNOWFALL WAS RECORDED DURING THE MONTH...NORMALLY
A TOTAL OF 4.6 INCHES OF SNOW FALLS. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME NO
SNOW HAS BEEN RECORDED IN VALENTINE DURING THE MONTH OF APRIL.
VALENTINE CAN OCCASIONALLY RECEIVE SNOW IN MAY...NORMAL SNOWFALL
IS 0.1 INCHES...HOWEVER WITH THE WARM WEATHER OF THE PAST COUPLE
OF MONTHS...THIS MAY IS LIKELY NOT TO RECORD ANY MORE SNOWFALL.
THE 2011-2012 SEASONAL SNOWFALL TOTAL WAS 15.9 INCHES...WHICH WAS
17.4 INCHES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 33.3 INCHES.
