ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES
WELL ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION FOR VALENTINE
SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION FOR NORTH PLATTE
MAY RESULTED IN A WIDE ARRAY OF WEATHER ACROSS THE REGION. THE
MONTH STARTED OUT WITH A RARE SNOW STORM AND UNSEASONABLY COLD
TEMPERATURES. BY THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH A UNUSUALLY STRONG RIDGE
PUSHED TEMPERATURES WELL INTO THE 90S. THE LAST WEEK OF THE MONTH
SAW A VERY ACTIVE WEATHER PATTERN WITH NUMEROUS STRONG TO SEVERE
THUNDERSTORMS AND AREAS OF SIGNIFICANT PRECIPITATION...BRINGING
SOME RECOVERY TO THE DROUGHT. THE TOTAL MONTHLY PRECIPITATION
RECORDED FOR MOST AREAS WAS THE HIGHEST SINCE APRIL OF 2012. MANY
LOCATIONS RECEIVED MORE PRECIPITATION DURING THE MONTH OF MAY THAN
WHAT WAS RECORDED ALL OF MAY...JUNE...JULY...AND AUGUST OF 2012.
THE AUTOMATED GAUGE AT BROKEN BOW RECORDED 5.51 INCHES DURING THE
MONTH OF MAY...WHICH WAS MORE THAN WHAT WAS RECORDED IN THE
PREVIOUS 12 MONTHS OF MAY 2012 TO APRIL 2013...WHICH HAD A TOTAL
OF ONLY 4.70 INCHES.

FOR NORTH PLATTE...THE AVERAGE DAILY MEAN TEMPERATURE FOR MAY WAS
58.8 DEGREES AND WAS 0.9 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 57.9 DEGREES.
THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 72.7 DEGREES...WHICH WAS
1.0 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 71.7 DEGREES. THE AVERAGE DAILY
LOW TEMPERATURE WAS 44.9 DEGREES...WHICH WAS 0.8 DEGREES ABOVE THE
NORMAL 44.1 DEGREES. FIVE DAILY TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE SET OR
TIED DURING THE MONTH OF MAY AT NORTH PLATTE...AND ARE SUMMARIZED
BELOW.

58.0 DEGREES WHICH WAS 0.4 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 57.6
DEGREES. THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 70.9 DEGREES
WHICH WAS EQUAL TO THE NORMAL OF 70.9 DEGREES. THE AVERAGE DAILY
LOW TEMPERATURE WAS 45.2 DEGREES WHICH WAS 0.9 DEGREES ABOVE THE
NORMAL OF 44.3 DEGREES. VALENTINE TIED ONE RECORD DURING THE
MONTH...WHEN THE LOW TEMPERATURE REACHED 24 DEGREES ON THE
4TH...WHICH TIED 1945.

PRECIPITATION AT LEE BIRD FIELD TOTALED 3.12 INCHES FOR THE
MONTH...WHICH WAS 0.16 INCHES BELOW THE NORMAL 3.28 INCHES. WHILE
3.12 INCHES WAS STILL BELOW NORMAL...IT WAS NEARLY 2 INCHES ABOVE
ANY MONTH IN THE LAST 13 MONTHS. SNOWFALL DURING THE MONTH
TOTALED 0.9 INCHES...AND WAS 0.9 INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL 0
INCHES. WHILE SNOWFALL IS NOT NORMAL DURING THE MONTH...IT HAS
HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE. THIS IS THE 14TH MAY ON RECORD TO
RECORD MEASURABLE SNOWFALL...AND RANKS 9TH AS THE SNOWIEST MAY.
NO PRECIPITATION RECORDS WERE SET DURING THE MONTH.

THE 2012-2013 SEASONAL SNOWFALL TOTAL FOR NORTH PLATTE WAS 30.2
INCHES...WHICH WAS 1.7 INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL 28.5 INCHES.

VALENTINE PRECIPITATION IN MAY TOTALED 4.74 INCHES WHICH WAS 1.61
INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL 3.13 INCHES. ONE RAINFALL RECORD WAS SET
DURING THE MONTH. ON MAY 19 MILLER FIELD RECORDED 1.09
INCHES...JUST BREAKING THE 1935 RECORD OF 1.07 INCHES. SNOWFALL
FOR THE MONTH TOTALED 2.0 INCHES AT VALENTINE...AND WAS 1.9
INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL 0.1 INCHES. NO DAILY SNOWFALL RECORDS WERE
SET DURING THE MONTH.

THE 2012-2013 SEASONAL SNOWFALL TOTAL FOR VALENTINE WAS AN
IMPRESSIVE 54.0 INCHES...WHICH WAS A STAGGERING 20.7 INCHES ABOVE
THE NORMAL 33.3 INCHES. 54.0 INCHES RANKS 14TH AS THE SNOWIEST ON
RECORD.
