COLDER AND WETTER THAN NORMAL FOR
BOTH NORTH PLATTE AND VALENTINE
FEBRUARY 2014 STARTED OUT WITH WELL BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES. BY
THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH TEMPERATURES HAD WARMED ABOVE
NORMAL...HOWEVER THE END OF THE MONTH SAW TEMPERATURES RETURN TO
WELL BELOW NORMAL. WHILE NO RECORDS WERE SET DURING THE
MONTH...THE MONTHLY AVERAGES WERE WELL BELOW NORMAL ACROSS THE
REGION.

FOR NORTH PLATTE...THE AVERAGE DAILY MEAN TEMPERATURE FOR THE
MONTH OF FEBRUARY WAS 20.3 DEGREES AND WAS 8.7 DEGREES BELOW THE
NORMAL OF 29.0 DEGREES. THIS RANKS AS THE 17TH COLDEST FEBRUARY ON
RECORD. THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 32.4
DEGREES...AND WAS A WHOPPING 10.6 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 43.0.
THE AVERAGE DAILY LOW TEMPERATURE FOR THE FEBRUARY WAS 8.2
DEGREES...WHICH WAS 6.8 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 15.0 DEGREES.
NO TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE SET DURING THE MONTH. WITH THE AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE OF 20.3 DEGREES...THIS WAS THE COLDEST MONTHLY AVERAGE
FOR FEBRUARY FOR NORTH PLATTE SINCE THE FEBRUARY OF 1993...WHICH
RECORDED AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 17.9 DEGREES. THIS WAS THE
COLDEST MONTH SINCE DECEMBER OF 2009...WHICH AVERAGED 17.7
DEGREES...ALTHOUGH JANUARY OF 2011 DID SEE AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
OF 20.4 DEGREES.

FOR VALENTINE...THE AVERAGE DAILY MEAN TEMPERATURE FOR FEBRUARY WAS
19.2 DEGREES...WHICH WAS 8.0 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 27.2
DEGREES. THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 32.1 DEGREES...AND
WAS 7.9 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 40.0 DEGREES. THE AVERAGE
DAILY LOW TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 6.2 DEGREES...WHICH WAS
8.2 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 14.4 DEGREES. NO RECORD
TEMPERATURES WERE SET DURING THE MONTH.

FEBRUARY PRECIPITATION AT LEE BIRD FIELD IN NORTH PLATTE TOTALED
0.73 INCHES...AND WAS 0.23 INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 0.50 INCHES.
SNOWFALL FOR THE MONTH TOTALED 11.6 INCHES AND WAS 6.3 INCHES
ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 5.3 INCHES. WHILE THERE WERE NO PRECIPITATION
RECORDS SET DURING THE MONTH...THE MONTHLY SNOWFALL TOTAL OF 11.6
INCHES RANKS AS THE 12TH SNOWIEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD. THIS IS ALSO
THE SECOND FEBRUARY IN A ROW OF AT LEAST 11 INCHES OF SNOWFALL
DURING THE MONTH FOR LEE BIRD FIELD IN NORTH PLATTE.

PRECIPITATION AT MILLER FIELD IN VALENTINE TOTALED 0.62 INCHES
FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY...WHICH WAS 0.48 INCHES ABOVE THE
NORMAL OF 0.48 INCHES. SNOWFALL FOR THE MONTH TOTALED 7.0 INCHES
AND WAS 1.4 INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 5.6 INCHES. NO DAILY
PRECIPITATION RECORDS WERE SET DURING THE MONTH IN VALENTINE.

ACROSS MOST OF WESTERN AND NORTH CENTRAL NEBRASKA. THE FAR
SOUTHEASTERN PANHANDLE AND FAR SOUTHWEST NEBRASKA WERE THE ONLY
AREAS THAT DID NOT SEE A HIGH CHANCE FOR BELOW NORMAL
TEMPERATURES. THIS AREA WAS CLASSIFIED WITH AN EQUAL CHANCE FOR
BELOW...ABOVE OR NEAR NORMAL TEMPERATURES. THE CLIMATE PREDICTION
CENTER CALLS FOR AN EQUAL CHANCE FOR BELOW...ABOVE OR NEAR NORMAL
PRECIPITATION FOR ALL OF WESTERN AND NORTH CENTRAL NEBRASKA DURING
THE MONTH OF MARCH. IN A TYPICAL MARCH...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
RISES TO 38.0 DEGREES FOR NORTH PLATTE AND 36.2 DEGREES FOR
VALENTINE. TYPICALLY IN MARCH 1.05 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION WITH
4.4 INCHES OF SNOW FALLS AT NORTH PLATTE AND 1.07 INCHES WITH 6.5
INCHES OF SNOW OCCURS AT VALENTINE.
