A Few Severe Storms Occurred Thursday Afternoon

Thunderstorms formed near a warm front in north central Nebraska early Thursday afternoon, and then moved southeast while others developed south of the front during the afternoon hours. Some of the storms were severe, including one that became a supercell and produced a 63 mph wind gust at Thedford and dropped quarter to golf ball size hail over parts of eastern Thomas and Blaine Counties. Another storm produced quarter size hail near Moorefield and caused winds that overturned a center pivot 3 miles east of Curtis.

Very heavy rain also accompanied the storms with some locations receiving over two inches of rainfall in a short time. For example, at Mason City, 3.60 inches of rain fell in only an hour.
