SEPTEMBER 2010
WARMER THAN NORMAL AND DRIER THAN NORMAL FOR VALENTINE
NORTH PLATTE SAW NEAR NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND NEAR NORMAL PRECIPITATION
A WIDE RANGE OF WEATHER OCCURRED DURING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER
ACROSS WESTERN AND NORTH CENTRAL NEBRASKA. TEMPERATURE AT TIMES
RESEMBLED SUMMER WITH HIGHS IN THE 90S...WHILE A FEW COLD FRONTS
BROUGHT FALL LIKE TEMPERATURES WITH HIGHS FAILING TO REACH 60
DEGREES AND LOWS IN THE 30S. THROUGH THE FIRST PART OF THE
MONTH...SEVERAL FRONTS MOVED ACROSS THE AREAS WITH LIGHT
PRECIPITATION AND A WIDE RANGE OF TEMPERATURES. DURING THE MIDDLE
OF THE MONTH A FRONTAL SYSTEM BROUGHT CLOUDS...DRIZZLE AND
AFTERNOON HIGHS ONLY IN THE 40S AND 50S. THIS WAS FOLLOWED QUICKLY
BY A WARM FRONT WHICH WARMED TEMPERATURES INTO THE 90S RESULTING
IN RECORD WARMTH. THE FINAL WEEK OF THE MONTH WAS DOMINATED BY A
HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE WITH MAINLY CLEAR SKIES AND SEASONAL
TEMPERATURES.

FOR NORTH PLATTE...THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR SEPTEMBER
WAS 79.3 DEGREES AND WAS 1.3 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 78.0
DEGREES. THE AVERAGE DAILY LOW TEMPERATURE WAS 45.8 DEGREES...AND
WAS 0.9 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 46.7 DEGREES. THE AVERAGE DAILY
MEAN TEMPERATURE WAS 62.5 DEGREES WHICH WAS ONLY 0.1 DEGREES ABOVE
THE NORMAL OF 62.4 DEGREES. TWO TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE SET DURING
THE MONTH IN NORTH PLATTE. ON SEPTEMBER 7TH...A LOW TEMPERATURE OF
34 DEGREES WAS RECORDED. THIS BROKE THE PREVIOUS RECORD LOW
TEMPERATURE OF 35 DEGREES SET IN 1898. THEN ON THE 20TH A HIGH OF
95 DEGREES WAS REACHED. THIS TIED THE RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE SET
IN 2005 AND 1937.

FOR VALENTINE...THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 78.1 DEGREES
AND WAS 0.9 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 77.2 DEGREES. THE AVERAGE
DAILY LOW TEMPERATURE WAS 46.3 DEGREES...WHICH WAS 0.5 DEGREES
ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 45.8 DEGREES. THE DAILY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
WAS 62.2 DEGREES WHICH WAS 0.7 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 61.5
DEGREES. TWO DAILY RECORDS OCCURRED DURING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER
AT VALENTINE. THE FIRST OCCURRED WHEN THE HIGH TEMPERATURE ON THE
18TH ONLY REACHED 48 DEGREES. THIS SET A NEW RECORD LOWEST DAILY
MAXIMUM...BREAKING THE OLD RECORD OF 50 DEGREES SET IN 1942. TWO
DAYS LATER...ON THE 20TH...THE HIGH SOARED TO 99 DEGREES. THIS SET
A NEW DAILY HIGH RECORD...PASSING THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 97 SET IN
1937.

PRECIPITATION FOR SEPTEMBER TOTALED 1.29 INCHES AT LEE BIRD FIELD.
THIS TOTAL WAS 0.03 INCHES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 1.32 INCHES. NO
DAILY PRECIPITATION RECORDS WERE SET DURING THE MONTH.

SEPTEMBER PRECIPITATION FOR VALENTINE TOTALED 0.89 INCHES AT MILLER
FIELD. THIS AMOUNT WAS 0.72 INCHES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 1.61 INCHES.
NO DAILY PRECIPITATION RECORDS WERE SET DURING THE MONTH.

CENTER CALLS FOR A HIGHER PROBABILITY OF ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES
ACROSS WESTERN AND NORTH CENTRAL NEBRASKA...WITH AN EQUAL CHANCE
OF ABOVE...BELOW...OR NEAR NORMAL PRECIPITATION. FOR NORTH PLATTE
AND VALENTINE...THE MONTH OF OCTOBER TYPICALLY EXPERIENCES CLOSE
TO 1.25 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION. THE AVERAGE HIGH DROPS FROM THE
LOWER 70S EARLY IN THE MONTH TO THE UPPER 50S BY THE END OF THE
MONTH. LOW TEMPERATURES DROP FROM AROUND 40 DEGREES TO THE UPPER
20S. WESTERN AND NORTH CENTRAL NEBRASKA HAS PASSED THE DATE OF
THE TYPICALLY FIRST FREEZE WITHOUT A FREEZE...HOWEVER THERE HAVE
BEEN SEVERAL YEARS WHERE THE FIRST FREEZE OCCURS IN THE FIRST WEEK
OR TWO OF OCTOBER.
