Driest May 1 through June 30 on Record
(Valentine, NE - 6th Driest)

The past 2 months have very dry across a large part of the region. For North Platte it has been the driest on record (since 1875 or 138 years). For Valentine, it was the sixth driest. In addition to the lack of precipitation, temperatures have been unseasonable warm, especially high temperatures.

May and June are the two wettest months of the year with normally 6.70 inches recorded at North Platte and 6.69 inches at Valentine, accounting for nearly 1/3 of the yearly precipitation total (North Platte - 20.23 inches and Valentine - 20.02 inches). Typically from May 1 to June 15 over 5 inches of rainfall is anticipated (1/4 of the yearly total). This year not even 1 inch was recorded (0.93 inches exactly) at Lee Bird Field in North Platte. Valentine did slightly better thanks to a June 15 thunderstorm (0.49 inches) totaling 1.27 inches.

Below is a table showing the top 15 driest May 1 through June 15 periods on record along with the Average - Max Temperatures and the Average - High and Low Average (Ave) Temperature. It also shows the information for only May and the May/June Totals.
