Severe Thunderstorms Occurred Saturday

Scattered thunderstorms formed over western Nebraska late Saturday afternoon as a trough of low pressure interacted with a warm, humid, and unstable air mass.  The storms moved eastward and produced several reports of large hail up to golf ball size as well as damaging winds and locally heavy rainfall.  Custer County was hit particularly hard with storms, as one cell produced hail estimated to be tennis ball size near Oconto around 7:00 p.m. CDT.  A later storm produced wind damage around Broken Bow, where a semi trailer was blown over in a parking lot and an eight foot diameter tree was reportedly blown over.  The airport at Broken Bow recorded a peak wind gust of 66 mph with that storm at 9:51 p.m. CDT.

Broken Bow received a total of 1.66 inches of rain from Saturday's storms.  That set a new daily record rainfall for July 10th.  The old record was 1.65 inches, set in 1977.
