Tornadoes Occurred Near Thedford Friday Evening

Three tornadoes were reported over the central Sandhills Friday evening. The first tornado of the event occurred 15 miles southeast of Brownlee (about 10 miles northeast of Thedford) near 600 p.m. CDT. The second and third tornadoes occurred between 705 and 717 p.m. CDT about 18 miles southwest of Thedford. Several funnel clouds were also reported in the area.

The funnel clouds and tornadoes were relatively brief and occurred with relatively weak thunderstorms.  This happened because the storms formed near a weak frontal boundary, which provided rotation for the storms to ingest. One storm did finally move away from the front into the hot and humid air to its south across McPherson County. As it moved away from the front, the storm stopped producing funnel clouds, but began dropping hail up to the size of golf balls.
