National Weather Service Honors
  O'Neill Cooperative Observer
Scott Poese
with the
 John Campanius Holm Award

September 12th, 2012

Scott Poese, Cooperative Weather Observer from O'Neill and KBRX Radio - was presented with the John Campanius Holm award on September 12th in O'Neill. The award presentation was held at the Blarney Stone Restaurant in O'Neill. Ryan Knutsvig, Meteorologist in Charge of the National Weather Service office in North Platte, officially presented Scott Poese with the Holm Award.  Scott Poese was also presented with his 25 Year Length-of-Service Award and an award pin, from the National Weather Service. In a special conclusion to the awards ceremony, Scott was presented with a proclamation from Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman and Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale - declaring September 12th, 2012 as Scott Poese Day.

In 1644 and 1655, John Campanius Holm, a Lutheran minister, was the first observer to take systematic observations in the American Colonies. The John Campanius Holm award was created to honor Cooperative Observers for outstanding accomplishments in the field of meteorological observations. It is named for a Lutheran minister, the first person known to have taken systematic weather observations in the American Colonies. Reverend Holm made weather observations, without the aid of instruments, in 1644 and 1645 near the present site of Wilmington, Delaware. His son later had these observations published.

From hundreds of nominations each year, no more than twenty-five of these awards are presented annually to the volunteer observers. The certificate is signed by the Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Director of the National Weather Service (NWS) - then presented by local National Weather Service representatives.  In 2012 only fourteen worthy recipients were chosen to receive the John Campanius Holm Award.
