Storm Summary for March 26th-27th
A DEEP LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM FORMED ACROSS THE NORTHERN PLAINS MARCH  
26TH AND TRACKED SLOWLY NORTHEAST MONDAY NIGHT AND TUESDAY MARCH  
27TH PRODUCING STRONG WINDS...ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS AND ONE  
WILDFIRE ACROSS CHERRY COUNTY.  
 
LOW PRESSURE DEEPENED TO 992 MB ACROSS THE NORTHERN PLAINS MONDAY  
AFTERNOON AND PRODUCED STRONG SOUTH WINDS ACROSS WESTERN AND NORTH  
CENTRAL NEBRASKA. BY 7 PM WINDS WERE GUSTING TO 56 MPH AT  
WHITECLAY IN SHERIDAN COUNTY.  
 
A LINE OF THUNDERSTORMS THEN DEVELOPED MONDAY EVENING ACROSS  
CHERRY COUNTY WHICH IGNITED A WILDFIRE ACROSS THE VALENTINE  
NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE IN CHERRY COUNTY WEST OF HIGHWAY 83.  
STRONG WEST WINDS CARRIED THE FIRE EAST BUT FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE  
TO CONTAIN THE FIRE AT THE HIGHWAY CROSSING.  
 
AT AROUND 2 AM TUESDAY MORNING...AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE IN THE  
JET STREAM PRODUCED A WIND GUST OF 67 MPH FROM THE WEST AT PINE  
RIDGE JUST ACROSS THE NEBRASKA STATE LINE NORTH OF SHERIDAN COUNTY.  
1 HOUR AND 45 MINUTES LATER AT 344 AM...A WIND GUST OF 63 MPH WAS  
RECORDED AT VALENTINE AIRPORT AS THE DISTURBANCE RACED EAST.  
STRONG WIND GUSTS OF LESSER SPEEDS OCCURRED ELSEWHERE OVERNIGHT  
AND TUESDAY MORNING.  
 
IN ADDITION TO THE STRONG WINDS...CRITICAL FIRE DANGER CONDITIONS  
DEVELOPED MONDAY...MONDAY NIGHT AND TUESDAY FROM STRONG WINDS...VERY  
LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCING DRY  
LIGHTNING.
