Damaging Winds and Large Hail

Ahead of a front, strong to severe thunderstorms developed over the region during the afternoon hours of Tuesday 14 June 2005.

The following are some images from the event. Click on the thumbnail for the full size version.

Severe thunderstorms moving eastward from near Ft Knox and Elizabethtown into parts of Bullitt and Nelson Counties at 2:08 PM EDT. You can clearly see an outflow boundary ahead of the storms over Hardin County, which can be a good indicator of strong gusty winds.

Base velocity image from the same time. The radar measured winds over western Bullitt County were 63 knots at about only 420 feet above ground level. Wind damage was reported with these storms from around Ft Knox over into Shepherdsville in Bullitt County.

What is referred to as a three body scatter spike is seen here in the radar data south of the storm near Mammoth Cave. This feature has been shown to be associated with very large hail within thunderstorms. The radar image here was taken at 2:38 PM EDT at an altitude of about 20,000 feet, and about 19 minutes later one inch diameter hail was reported in Kessinger in Hart County.

Another good example of the three body scatter radar phenomena, this time over southern Casey County at 4:25 PM EDT, again at about 20,000 feet. About 5 minutes after this image, wind damage and golfball sized hail was reported in Dunnville, in southern Casey County.
