Flooding, Large Hail, and Damaging Winds

Numerous clusters of strong to severe thunderstorms developed over the region during the afternoon and evening hours of Thursday 19 May 2005, lasting into the early morning hours of Friday 20 May. Storms produced large hail and damaging winds, but the threat quickly turned to flooding as storms trained over the same area, producing excessive amounts of rainfall.

The following are some images from the event. Click on the thumbnail for the full size version.

Radar estimated storm total precipitation amounts. Clearly you can see where storms trained over the same areas during this event, producing high rainfall totals. There was likely some hail contamination in the radar rainfall data, so actual observed rainfall amounts may have been slightly less.

Radar reflectivity cross section at 6:29 PM EDT of a severe thunderstorm near the Oldham-Henry County line. The overhang in the high reflectivity above 20,000 feet is indicative of a strong updraft, capable of supporting large hail. In fact, this storm produced quarter to golfball sized hail around or just after this time.

Composite reflectivity at the same time as the cross section above, overlaid with the radar estimated maximum hail size for each storm cell. The white line indicates the rough orientation of the cross section.

6 PM EDT visible satellite image and surface observations. You can clearly see a warm front extending from south of Indianapolis to south of Huntington, West Virginia. Storms developed in the unstable airmass along and south of this warm front. (full sized image 983KB)
