High Winds, Large Hail, and a Tornado

 

During the afternoon and early evening hours of Friday 22 April 2005, a broken line of strong to severe thunderstorms rolled eastward across much of the Ohio River Valley region. Numerous reports of large hail and damaging winds were received with these storms, along with a confirmed brief F0 tornado touchdown near downtown Louisville.

Here are a couple radar pictures from the event, depicting the line of storms with a strong gust front seen in both the reflectivity and velocity data west of the radar at Ft. Knox (click for larger images):

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN LOUISVILLE CONDUCTED A FRIDAY
EVENING STORM SURVEY IN DOWNTOWN LOUISVILLE. THE STORM PRODUCED
INTERMITTENT MINOR DAMAGE ALONG CAMPBELL STREET JUST SOUTH OF THE
OHIO RIVER. SEVERAL WITNESSES SAW A FUNNEL CLOUD FORM OVER THE OHIO
RIVER BETWEEN 640 AND 645 PM. A TRANSFORMER JUST SOUTH OF MARKET
STREET EXPLODED...PERHAPS DUE TO LIGHTNING JUST AHEAD OF THE FUNNEL.

THE FUNNEL CLOUD BECAME A TORNADO AT 647 PM NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF
CAMPBELL STREET AND MARKET AVENUE...WHERE A ROOF OF A BUSINESS WAS
DESTROYED AS WELL AS A TELEPHONE POLE BEING SNAPPED. A
REPRESENTATIVE OF THE MAYORS OFFICE OBSERVED THE TORNADO AT THIS
INTERSECTION...WITH A DISTINCT SWIRL OF DIRT ROTATING AROUND. AN
EMPTY 18 WHEEL TRAILER FLIPPED OVER 1 BLOCK NORTHEAST OF THIS
LOCATION.

THE LAST OBSERVED DAMAGE FROM THE BRIEF F0 TORNADO
WAS AT THE STOCKYARD FARM SUPPLY COMPANY AT 124 SOUTH JOHNSON
STREET. THIS BUSINESS SUSTAINED ROOF DAMAGE. THE FUNNEL WAS ON THE
GROUND LESS THAN 2 MINUTES WITH AN AVERAGE PATH LENGTH OF 50 YARDS.
AFTER THE STORM PASSED WITNESSES REPORTED OVER 1 INCH OF PEA SIZE
HAIL THAT COVERED THE GROUND.
