April 2, 2006

Four waves of storms affected the region on the evening of Sunday, April 2, 2006.  The first cluster of storms affected areas primarily east of Interstate 65 from about 4pm to 8pm.  After about a 30 minute break, new storms advanced into the region from the west.  A squall line with powerful winds, called a "derecho", roared up the Ohio River valley through Louisville and into the northern sections of the Bluegrass, and was responsible for one of the area's two tornadoes of the day (in Shelby County).  At the same time, large individual thunderstorms, called "supercells", charged across southern sections of Kentucky and produced the region's second tornado of the event (in Logan County).  These second and third waves of storms had exited the region by midnight.  The fourth and final episode of stormy activity was when severe thunderstorms creeped just north of the Tennessee line between 1am and 3am CDT.

A tornado of F1 strength briefly touched down north of Shelbyville, Kentucky, in Shelby County.  Wind speeds reached 100 mph, the path length was 2 miles, and the path width was 450 feet.  It occurred at 10:15pm EDT, nine minutes after a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for Shelby County, and five minutes after the warning was upgraded to a Tornado Warning.  There were no injuries or fatalities.  Another survey team verified a weak F1 tornado in northeast Logan County near the town of Edwards in south central Kentucky. Wind speeds may have reached as high as 90 mph, with the tornado path length of around 2 miles, and the width of 100 yards. The time of touchdown was approximately 10:30pm CDT, with 32 minutes of warning as the Tornado Warning was issued at 9:58pm CDT.

Radar Information:

Velocity image of bow echo
Bow echo: High resolution base velocity image at 916 PM EDT (0116 UTC) from the Louisville NEXRAD. Inbound winds over Perry and Crawford Counties were near 75 knots at about 3700 feet above ground level. The leading edge of the gust front in the radar data is seen over eastern Crawford and Orange Counties, however due to the fact that the radar beam is at least 2000 feet above the ground at this distance, the actual surface gust front edge may be slightly further east.

Reflectivity image
High resolution base reflectivity image taken at the same time (0116 UTC).

Supercell on radar
Base reflectivity image from the Ft. Campbell NEXRAD of a supercell just entering northwest Logan County at 0221 UTC (921 PM CDT). The storm was still exhibiting rotation over Todd County in the southwest part of the cell. This is the same storm that caused major tornado damage north of Hopkinsville.

Buh-bye, storm
Reflectivity image taken 30 minutes later (0251 UTC / 951 PM CDT). Notice that the storm, now over far northeast Logan County, had weakened dramatically over a distance of just 20 miles after being a long-lived supercell across much of western Kentucky. Another severe storm was about to enter the northwest part of Logan County.
