Roll Clouds and Shelf Clouds Near Bowling Green, Kentucky, on June 28, 2007

On the evening of June 28, 2007 scattered thunderstorms developed throughout much of central Kentucky.   Though no severe weather occurred, some unusual cloud formations did develop, such as these around Bowling Green.  These clouds, known as "roll clouds" and "shelf clouds" sometimes form at the leading edge of an approaching thunderstorm.  They often signal the "gust front" -- that cool rush of wind we feel several minutes before the rain actually starts to fall.

Many thanks to the intrepid photographers who took these pictures, and to Chris Allen of WBKO-TV in Bowling Green for sharing them with us!
