...PRELIMINARY TORNADO ASSESSMENT FOR PERRY COUNTY IN SOUTH  CENTRAL  INDIANA AND BRECKINRIDGE, MEADE AND HARDIN COUNTIES IN NORTH CENTRAL KENTUCKY...

Representatives from the National Weather Service in Louisville Kentucky conducted a survey of the storm damage in Perry County in South Central Indiana and Breckinridge, Meade, and Hardin Counties in North Central Kentucky.  The following are the preliminary findings of this investigation.

* EVENT DATE: April 28 2002

* EVENT TYPE: Results reflect F2 damage in the town of Tobinsport in far Southern Perry County in South Central Indiana.  Estimated maximum wind speeds 150 mph.

* EVENT TYPE: Results reflect F2 damage in Breckinridge County, Kentucky with spot F3 damage in one section of the town of Irvington in the Valley Terrace subdivision. Estimated maximum wind speeds 160 mph.

* EVENT TYPE: Results reflect F0 damage in rural Meade County, Kentucky. Estimated maximum wind speeds 70 mph.

* EVENT TYPE: Results reflect F1 damage in Radcliff in Northern Hardin County, Kentucky with spot F2 damage to two homes. Maximum wind speeds 115 mph.

* DAMAGE PATH WIDTH: Estimated most locations between 100 and 200 yards, but only around 50 to 75 yards wide in Radcilff.

* DAMAGE AREA: The tornado path appears to begin in extreme Southern Perry County in South Central Indiana at Tobinsport. The tornado then crossed the Ohio River into Breckinridge County just north of Cloversport.  The tornado then skipped across the countryside crossing US highway 60 one half mile west of Irvington.  The tornado then moved through Irvington, and this appears to be the time of greatest intensity.  The tornado then moved into rural Meade County  and weakens and lifts back into the air.  There is another brief touchdown in Radcliff.   We are assuming this is the same circulation. The damage is concentrated in a very small area of Radcliff.

* DAMAGE PATH LENGTH: Around 35 miles.

* DAMAGE: Several mobile homes destroyed. Several well-constructed homes deemed unlivable. Widespread damage to other homes and property.

* DAMAGE COST: Undetermined.

* INJURIES: 19 Injuries.

* FATALITIES: 1 Fatality.
