School
Slide 74 of 95
Every school should develop a tornado safety plan and conduct frequent drills, especially just before the beginning of the tornado season.
Schools should be inspected and tornado shelters designated. Your local National Weather Service office can provide you with information on selecting appropriate shelter areas. Since there is considerable variability in the design of schools, a local engineer or architect could also provide assistance.
Principals should designate who is responsible for activating the plan should severe weather threaten. Assign a back-up person in case the primary decision-maker is absent.
