The Area Forecast Discussion (AFD) is issued in advance of the seven day
forecast and provides a discussion of the current weather and the
meteorological reasoning for the forecast. Often, contractions are
used, but not exclusively. Finally, if any watch, warning, or advisory is in effect (except for severe
thunderstorm, tornado or flash flood), it is included at the end of the
AFD. The AFD is routinely issued from 2 to 4 AM and 2 to 4 PM, but
may be updated at any time to reflect current trends.
